Disable unnecessary push notifications
Push notifications can lead to higher data use, especially if you use a lot of interactive apps such as social network clients and messaging services. A number of apps also push promotional content that is not relevant to you.Modern Android devices and iPhone offer ways to disable push notifications through the system settings. You should also set your email to fetch mode and disable push unless you receive critical, time sensitive messages.


Track data use
The latest iterations of both Android and iOS allow you to track data usage for individual apps to identify the ones eating up your data allowance. You can even disable background data transfer (data use when the apps are running in the background to perform some task).


Disable auto-download on WhatsApp
Most WhatsApp users who're part of some or the other group receive multiple forwards in the form of pictures, videos and audio. When ever you receive these items you also incur data costs. Fortunately, you can choose to disable auto-downloads for all, none or a certain content type whenever you receive a multimedia message. You should ideally enable video and audio auto-downloads only when the phone's connected to Wi-Fi.


Offline viewing/listening
Do you watch a lot of videos on the go? Or stream music? Mobile data networks in India don't really offer good bandwidth plus data use is expensive. It's a good idea to subscribe to a paid plan of a music streaming service and sync your songs when connected to Wi-Fi. YouTube also lets you temporarily download music videos from most popular Indian record labels, valid for a period of 48 hours.


Use data compression
If you read a lot of online articles on your phone, it's a good idea to enable compression on your mobile browser. Google Chrome offers a 'Reduce data usage' setting to make the size of the web pages you visit smaller using Google servers. It even offers graphical statistics of data savings. Opera also offers Max, a free, data-savings and data-management app that compresses videos, images and media from apps and websites to reduce data use.

Coming up with an enduring design is exactly what HTC set out to do with the One M9, the latest version of its premium smartphone, which bears more than a striking resemblance to its predecessor, the One M8. The Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer is betting that consumers still like the metal-clad body enough -- along with some under-the-hood improvements -- to give the One family a second look. The One M9 hits the market later this month.

"The response has been overwhelming, people like our design," Chou said.The One M9 still features an all-aluminum body, which has been slightly tweaked for a better grip. The smartphone has the familiar face with the large "forehead" and "chin" above and below the display, allowing for the front-facing "Boomsound" speakers. In addition to the gunmetal color, HTC offers new colors including a silver-and-gold version that Chou said was modeled after similarly two-toned luxury watches.

apple TV device would be available this year

The Apple TV set-top streaming box will reportedly get an update later this year that could finally bring some long-awaited features to the device.

Apple will unveil a new Apple TV box at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) later this year, Buzzfeed is reporting, citing people who claim to have knowledge of the company's plans. The Apple TV announcement will come in tandem with the unveiling of a software development kit that will allow developers to bring apps to the set-top box, according to the report. Apple TV currently has apps, but those are automatically added to the device. The update would deliver an App Store to the Apple TV, similar to the App Store on iOS devices like the iPhone and the iPad.

The Apple TV box has been on a strange odyssey since its debut in 2007. The original device was designed to bring iTunes content to a customer's television and was followed by subsequent versions that stripped away the need for onboard storage and focused solely on streaming content to the television. An updated Apple TV device hasn't appeared since 2012.

The Apple TV box currently offers access to iTunes content, as well as a host of apps, ranging from YouTube to HBO Go. Owners can also rent and buy movies and television shows from the device. The Apple TV device will also play host to HBO's upcoming streaming-only service, called HBO Now, starting next month. It'll initially be the only TV streaming device to support HBO Now, beating out competitors Roku and Google's Chromecast.

At the WinHec conference in China on Tuesday, Microsoft's operating system chief Terry Myerson told Reuters that "we are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10." The remark was aimed at China where software piracy has been a huge problem for Microsoft. But the news certainly brought smiles to the faces of anyone who runs a non-genuine copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 and suddenly thought that an upgrade toWindows 10 would bring legitimacy.

Windows pirates may need to wipe those smiles off their faces. A spokeswoman for Microsoft clarified the upgrade process to CNET, indicating that the version of Windows 10 doesn't magically become licensed if you upgrade from an unlicensed version:

With Windows 10, although nongenuine PCs may be able to upgrade to Windows 10, the upgrade will not change the genuine state of the license. Nongenuine Windows is not published by Microsoft. It is not properly licensed, or supported by Microsoft or a trusted partner. If a device was considered nongenuine or mislicensed prior to the upgrade, that device will continue to be considered nongenuine or mislicensed after the upgrade.

PC sales may be in a slump and Windows 8 demand has been lackluster, but Windows continues to be one of Microsoft's core revenue generators, both on the consumer and corporate sides. As such, the company obviously loses a chunk of change anytime a non-licensed version of Windows is installed. Pirated versions of Windows have especially been prevalent in China where around 75 percent of PC software is not properly licensed, Reuters said, citing recent studies.

In 2011, then-CEO Steve Ballmer told employees that Microsoft's revenue in China represented only 5 percent of sales in the US, implying that much of its software in China is pirated and unlicensed.

Microsoft enters into budget segment with lumia 430

To say that the Lumia brand is diluted with low cost smartphones would be a bit of an understatement. However, Microsoft has found a way to lower the barrier to entry even further with the launch of the Dual-SIM Lumia 430 model today.

It is all fairly pedestrian in the specifications department, as we will see below, but the real story is just how inexpensive this device is. Pricing will vary by market, but Microsoft is estimating the Lumia 430 Dual-SIM smartphone to be priced around $70 USD before any subsidies are applied.

To hit these kinds of price points, some sacrifices have to be made of course, but all in all it is still a typical low end Lumia. Before Microsoft bought the Lumia line from Nokia, we had similar low end phones launched that would be missing key features. The Lumia 635 is a great example of this. Although it was a decent device, the lack of a proximity sensor and ambient light sensor made it difficult to use in real life, and the limited 512 MB of RAM meant it could not access the entire Windows Phone catalog of apps.

Microsoft has taken a different approach, and all of the low end devices that they have launched with the Microsoft logo have included the standard features needed to enjoy a smartphone experience, and the $70 Lumia 430 is no exception. It comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 SoC, with dual 1.2 GHz Cortex A7 cores, so it will not be the speediest device ever launched, but Windows Phone has always been good on low end devices and avoids the stutter and chop which has plagued Android. RAM is a healthy 1 GB, which means that the Lumia 430 does have access to the entire Windows Phone store. Other key features such as the ambient light and proximity sensor are included, even for this budget price, so obvious features such as automatic brightness will work.

Speaking of brightness, the LCD will also likely be a very low end model, but it is a 4” 800x480 LCD, although it is not listed whether this is an IPS display (hopefully it is) but the display enhancement technologies such as ClearBlack are not available. I have also found with the low end Lumia phones that the display coating is also either very thin or not available, and this could continue that trend due to the price.

Storage is also something that Microsoft has bumped up, with Nokia opting for 4 GB on the very low end models, but Microsoft has equipped even this low end device with 8 GB of internal NAND. MicroSD support will give an additional 128 GB more space, and Windows Phone supports MicroSD very well so this will not be an issue.

Dubbed the Universal Foldable Keyboard, Microsoft's latest accessory works with iPads, iPhones, Android devices and Windows tablets. Also announced is compatibility with Windows Phone, starting with Windows 10 for phones.

Microsoft continues to solidify Windows Phone's mid-range line-up with the announcement today of the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL.

The core stats of the phones are typical for mid-range phones: 1GB RAM, 8GB storage (expandable with microSD), quad core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processors. The RAM is an important upgrade from the current models in this price bracket, the Lumia 630 and 635; these only have 512MB, which limits their software compatibility. Both phones sport 1280×720 screens, again an upgrade from the 854×480 of the 630/635.

In another important upgrade over the 630/635, both include proximity and ambient light sensors. They also add digital compasses, and support the SensorCore platform, enabling them to somewhat function as pedometers.
