intel news -Intel And Taiwan Semiconductor Have Very Different Definitions

On TSMC's (TSM) most recent earnings call, Co-CEO Mark Liu had the following to say with respect to the company's upcoming 10-nanometer process:
And so in the summary, our 10 FinFET technology will be qualified by the end of 2015. 10 FinFET transistor will be our third-generation FinFET transistor. This technology will come with industry's leading performance and density.
Now, what's interesting is that TSMC's management tried to convince investors that it would have a 10-nanometer process ready to go around the same time that Intel (INTC) would have its own 10-nanometer process. Intel, of course, promised that 10-nanometer would be ready for high volume production by the end of 2015

Battle of the (broad)bands: Online music's Grammy picks

he Grammys are awarded Sunday starting at 5 p.m. PT. Can online music services' data predict the winners?
(Credit: Getty Images)
The debate over man versus machine has existed as long as machines have. So how well does raw data hold up for something as human as musical expression?
Online music services, which use data to figure out what you like, would say: very well, thanks. And for the Grammy Awards, the Recording Academy's yearly Employees of the Year ceremony, they're putting their data to the test.

Apple looking to build mobile-payments service, report says

Apple already lets users buy music, books, and apps through an iTunes account. But the tech giant has plans to expand its mobile-payment efforts, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.
Citing anonymous sources, the report says Apple is exploring moving beyond the realm of digital goods and letting users pay for physical goods and services -- such as clothes or a taxi ride -- with an iTunes account. The Journal says Eddy Cue, the Apple executive in charge of iTunes and the App Store, has already met with industry executives to discuss the topic.

It's not the bus, stupid. It's the system

A couple of hundred years ago, textile workers smashed stocking frames, burned factories, and clashed with police to protest the changes being wrought by what the essayist Thomas Carlyle later described as the new Mechanical Age.
They were afraid of losing their jobs in an economy with no social safety net. It's now clear that their enemy wasn't the new technology; it was a political and economic system which left the have-nots struggling for survival. But they didn't blame the Industrial Revolution, they blamed the face of the Industrial Revolution: the machine.
With the benefit of 20-20 hindsight, you'd think that we would have learned a lesson. Think again.
Over the last few months, a building inchoate rage against the technology industry has exploded into public view. In Paris and Lyon earlier this month, striking cab drivers attacked Uber cars to protest the launch of the private-car service in France. Rude Baguette, a French tech news site, reported tires slashed, car windows shattered, and vehicles being pelted with eggs. Closer to home, the Bay Area -- home to Silicon Valley and San Francisco -- has been pulled into a rancorous dispute over tech-driven gentrification and the responsibilities wealthy companies ought to shoulder to ameliorate the resulting social dislocations caused, in great degree, by their increasing prosperity.

Early Macintosh developer: We would have worked for free

UPERTINO, Calif. -- For the people who created the Macintosh, it was the proverbial labor of love.
On Saturday evening, the original Macintosh development team came together to celebrate the machine it had created three decades earlier -- a product that had paved the way for hits to come, including the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

It was in this building 30 years ago that a young Steve Jobs changed the world of personal computing -- all to the soundtrack of the "Chariots of Fire" theme.
Looking back fondly on the process, the team said creating the product was not about the money. "If Steve said, 'How about you guys don't get paid?' said Rod Holt, Apple's original hardware guru, and one of the company's first 10 employees. "We would have still had a group."
"But there would have been a lot of grumbling," he added, laughing.
Bill Atkinson, who created the MacPaint program, described Jobs pitch in recruiting him, even tearing up at one point during the panel. A grad student at the time, he was reluctant to join. But Apple flew him to Cupertino and Jobs personally convinced him. "Think of how fun it is to surf on the front of a wave," Jobs told Atkinson. "Come down to Silicon Valley, where we are inventing the future."

1520 lumia mini emerges

The yet to be announced Nokia Lumia 1520v appeared in a duo of live photos. Also known as Nokia Lumia 1520 mini, the device is expected to bring the top-shelf specs of Nokia’s flagship phablet in a more compact for factor.
The duo of leaked images showcase the Nokia Lumia 1520v sized up against its bigger brother and what appears to be an Apple iPhone. Unsurprisingly, in line with its name, the Nokia Lumia 1520v sports the same looks as the 1520 phablet in a significantly smaller form factor.
Alleged specs of the Nokia Lumia 1520v include a 4.45” display with a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels (not a 4.3” 1080p unit as initially thought) and 2,370mAh battery. The camera of the Lumia 1520 mini is expected to be a 14MP unit.

A hi-tech tennis coach at courtside

Tennis equipment has come a long way since the days of the simple wooden racquet with catgut strings.
Metal and then carbon models appeared on the market, and now computer technology is being embedded in one of the newer tennis racquets on the market.
Packed with sensors detecting string vibration and movement, the device works with a smartphone (over Bluetooth) or plugs into a computer (via USB).
But this tech revolution has also led the International Tennis Federation to change its rulebook, and to introduce a programme to approve the new equipment for use in its tournaments.
The BBC has been behind the scenes at tennis laboratories to see what is involved - LJ Rich reports.

nokia share market

Nokia suffered a 22% fall in sales at its core NSN division in the final three months of last year.
With Nokia's mobile handset business due to be bought by Microsoft, the NSN network equipment arm will remain the Finnish company's primary division.
NSN's sales fell to 3.1bn euros (£2.5bn; $4.2bn) from 3.98bn. Nokia shares dropped more than 4%.
For the group as a whole, including the mobile arm, Nokia reported net profits of 41m euros for 2013.
In 2012 it made a loss of 1.48bn euros.
Annual net sales for the group were 12.7bn euros, down 17% year-on-year.
The NSN unit made a net profit of 15m euros, compared with a net loss of 1.4bn euros in 2012.
Nokia has been selling off unprofitable businesses and cutting costs in an attempt to stem losses in its mobile phone business, which has lost out to rival smartphone makers such as Apple and Samsung.
The handset and services division saw net sales of 2.6bn euros in the fourth quarter of last year, down 29% from the same quarter the year before.
Nokia is receiving 5.4bn euros from Microsoft for its devices and services business. While shareholders have agreed the deal, regulators have yet to give it the go-ahead.
Stephen Elop, the former president and chief executive of Nokia Corporation, stepped down and resigned from the company's board under the terms of the deal, receiving a controversial 18.8m euro pay-out.
He is due to move over to Microsoft when the sale is completed and is tipped by some as a likely replacement for Microsoft's outgoing chief executive Steve Ballmer.
Mr Ballmer is expected to leave the company in 2014.

Power Week-in-Review: Mega Flow Battery, EV Forecast & Mag Res Charger for Qi Phones

Researchers at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences have developed a metal-free flow battery that is claimed could significantly reduce the cost of power storage for renewable energy sources compared with traditional batteries. The grid-scalemega flow battery is based on the electrochemistry of organic molecules called quinones that are widely abundant in nature and inexpensive to maintain. The battery's energy storage capability is limited only by the size of its chemical storage tanks, which can be independently sized from the battery's electrochemical conversion system. (See photo below.) (For details, see the paper in Nature: "A metal-free organic–inorganic aqueous flow battery.")
A report from research firm Navigant Research forecasts that there will be more than 35 million electric vehicles on the roads worldwide by 2022. According to the report, "Electric Vehicle Market Forecasts," while EVs continue to command a premium purchase price, the operational cost savings over their lifetime make them cost competitive with traditional internal combustion vehicles.
In product news, ConvenientPower has introduced what it claims is the industry's first magnetic resonance wireless charging technology to charge Qi mobile phones at distances up to 18 mm. The company's WoW Z device is compatible with the voltage range of Qi chargers and has a charging efficiency of 65% at 18 mm.
Micrel has launched an 85-V half-bridge MOSFET driver featuring adaptive-dead-time and shoot-through protection. The MIC4605operates from 5.5 to 16 V and is suited for demanding battery operated motor applications.
New 650-V "green mode" ac buck switches from Fairchild Semiconductor are aimed at home appliance, industrial, and smart-meter applications. The FSL306 and FSL336 offer burst-mode operation with a 250-µA operating current and power scalability from 0.5 to 3 W (FSL306).
Toshiba Electronics has enhanced its TB6865FG wireless power transmitter and TC7763WBG receiver chipset. The chipset now supports 5-W power transfer and is compatible with Qi version 1.1.
XP Power has introduced a 130-W model to its ECS series of ac/dc power supplies. The "green" single-output ECS130 is packaged in a 2 x 4 x 1.25-in. open-frame format and can be either convection or forced-air cooled.
Finally, a new high-capacity 12-V industrial battery from Yuasa Batteries has been added to the company's SWL family of valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries. The SWL4250 is suited for UPS and other high-discharge-rate applications.
